World Food Day 2026
This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow”, is both relevant and
applicable for Winpak. In line with the Food and Agriculture Organization’s
(FAO) theme, Winpak uses innovation and technology to advance packaging
solutions and supply chains while also safeguarding the planet for future
generations. Winpak’s own vision is to “provide the best packaging solutions for
people and planet”, in direct support of this year’s World Food Day theme.
So, how does a packaging company support the tenets of World Food Day? First, some
important statistics to share to put this issue into context.
• 645 million people face hunger every day1
• One-third of the world’s population cannot afford a healthy diet2
• 19% of the food available to consumers is wasted at the retail, food service, and household levels3
Winpak innovates and produces flexible and rigid packaging solutions used to preserve
and extend the shelf life of perishable products in the protein, dairy, and
food and beverage markets. Like the FAO advocates, Winpak has invested in
material science and processing technologies to advance our packaging
solutions. These investments have brought forward packaging innovations that
are up to 30% lighter than a couple decades ago and can extend shelf life by 45
days or more.
The
lightweighting of packaging means Winpak uses fewer resources for similar volumes
we produced previously. In keeping with our tagline, "It's our Nature to Protect™", reduced resource consumption lowers our environmental footprint and
lowers our impact on the climate. Over the past 9 years, Winpak has reduced its
GHG emissions intensity by 14% as of the end of 2025 vs a 2017 baseline.
Given the statistic
above regarding food waste involving households, shelf life remains critical to
controlling and reducing this loss. Properly designed and utilized packaging
extends the food’s shelf life and ensures the consumer can utilize the food as
intended.
As
an example, an uncooked beef roast stored in a refrigerator with no or improper
packaging may be non-consumable within 5 days. That same beef roast will remain
fresh for cooking and consuming more than 21 days later when properly packaged.
This shelf-life extension enabled through packaging is a critical factor for
reduced food loss and waste.
Winpak
understands that the topic of food affordability and availability goes beyond
packaging. The engagement of governments, the private sector, and consumers is
critical in addressing this issue. Investments in improved farming and
harvesting practices are also part of the solution. For our part, Winpak will
continue to innovate using material science to advance improved packaging
solutions to both increase shelf life and reduce climate impact. Our aim will
continue to be to “provide the best packaging solutions for people and planet”.
And this means we will innovate today to nourish the future.
