Controller - Winpak Portion Packaging
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Finance, Business Unit Controller will provide
leadership including coordination of company financial closing and related
financial affairs. Ensure company accounting procedures conform to both U.S.
and Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. Ownership of the company’s
general ledger and internal controls.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and other regulatory or
governmental requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley, and Cost Accounting
Standards (CAS). Ensures compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
Direct and coordinate monthly/quarterly/annual financial reporting.
Lead preparation of accurate monthly reporting required for Corporate and
the Consolidated Financial book, review of Account Analysis for all
locations, monitor transactions from Information Systems to the general
ledger and making sure controls are in place to properly record company
transactions, including elimination entries. Coordination of the year end
and financial audits.
Ensure Assistant Controller and Plant Management Accounting teams
understand and comply with agreed financial procedures, and to drive
improvements to these systems and processes to enhance efficiency and
control. This includes periodic visits to the plants to review with the
Plant Managers any questions that might arise from their prior month
financial results and to discuss with them key performance indicators and
trends (i.e., cycle count accuracy).
Oversee daily operations of the accounting department including
authorization of company disbursements, review of cash available for
disbursement with the Credit Manager and the Accounting Manager in
Toronto. To maintain effective systems of financial control; to keep
financial control procedures under review per the Sarbanes-Oxley narratives
and alert the Director of Finance of any inadequacies.
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate department staff. This
includes interviewing for open positions, direct and coach team members, ensures
clarity of roles and key deliverables to make the best use of their skills,
and to maintain an efficient service to the organization. Agree to and
review work objectives for team members and to take responsibility for
conducting reviews in a timely fashion. Provide continuous cross-training,
review and redistribution of job responsibilities so that the month-end
process continues to improve. Continuous succession planning and talent
assessment to ensure organizational continuity.
Ensure intercompany transactions are properly
accounted for and recorded.
Prepare and help lead new ERP system implementation.
Promote
teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication within the department
and company. Be an ambassador of good will.
Work on special projects as needed.
Perform
other duties to support the accounting team and other areas aligned with your
areas of responsibility.
Responsible for ensuring that all
employees follow company GMP, sanitation, prerequisite programs, chemical
control and food safety plans and policies.
In the
incumbent’s absence, these responsibilities will be transferred to the Director
of Finance or designee.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control
principles including U.S./Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles.
Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems
including but not limited to ERP Systems and Fixed Asset Software.
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements,
and projections.
Working knowledge of costing and impact of manufacturing variance.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
Must be trained in and follow company policies on GMP, sanitation,
pre-requisite programs, chemical control and food safety plans and
policies.
Must be competent to carry out food packaging safety and quality
responsibilities.
Ability to travel, sometimes overnight domestically and
internationally.
EXPERIENCE:
Seven to ten years of experience in
senior-level finance or relevant accounting positions.
Understanding of Manufacturing accounting
Managing and couching of team members at
all levels.
EDUCATION:
Undergraduate degree in Accounting. Completion of CPA and/or MBA/Masters
in Finance or Accounting is preferred but not required.
