Systems Engineer

The focus of the Systems Engineer is to serve as the principal electro-mechanical engineer in the design and development of machine system and sub-systems.  The Systems Engineer performs various system level engineering functions including requirements development, design, analysis, integration, test, and consultation.  The Systems Engineer supports both Engineering and R&D functions and researches and evaluates new automation and system technologies.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technical discipline.  Master’s degree is preferred. 

Experience:

10+ years of electro-mechanical design, automation or system engineering experience
Experience within a food packaging machinery manufacturer is strongly preferred


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of engineering disciplines in the fields of mechanical, electrical, servo, pneumatic, hydrualic, thermal, fluid and electro-mechanical control systems.  Knowledge of packaging machinery and automation is strongly preferred.
Advanced knowledge of SolidWorks CAD and the ability to design, generate and interpret Engineering drawings and schematics
Familiar working within a Product Data Management System (PDM) for configuration management, as well as with document change control processes
Proven ability to solve complex analytical problems and provide robust solutions.  System simulation experience is a plus.   
Knowledgeable in material selection, tolerance stackup analysis, GD&T and application of best engineering practicies. 
Disciplined in Concurrent and Value Engineering methodolgies in design for cost, manufacturability, assembly and service
Strong project planning and organizational skills, and good understanding of project budgets and adherence 
Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
Ability to easily communicate technical matters to audiences of varying technical skills both internally and with customers
Ability to work in a fast-paced cross-functional organization and balance priorities
Creative, independent, hands-on and energetic personality with the ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision
Knowledge of MS Office applications including WORD, Excel, Power Point, Access and Visio
Knowledge of PLC and HMI programming is a plus
Familiar with working with various agency standards like IEC, UL, CE, EN, CAS, EU, FDA, OSHA, NEMA, etc
Basic understanding of the concepts of FMEA, Lean Manufacturing, statistical process control (SPC) and Six Sigma

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for managing complex electro-mechanical automation machinery systems including, but not limited to, requirements generation, architecture, detailed design, analysis, design data generation, integration, and verification and validation testing and debugging
Serves as technical lead/support for new machine R&D and existing machinery
Researches/Evaluates new automation and system technologies
Develops/optimizes lab system setups for machine testing
Champions machine system and subsystem hazard and risk assessments
Consults with mechanical and electrical/controls engineers and programmers to ensure designs/controls conform and are optimized for machine system performance requirements and safety
Conducts and participates in design reviews with both internal and external customers
Develops system engineering processes and procedures
Supports technical information in the generation of machine manuals
Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary by supervisor

Travel:

              Limited travel required
