R&D Manager, Sachet & Pouch

The incumbent will lead the Research and Development team and will help train, manage, and support all day-to-day functions of R&D Engineers, relating to Sachet & Pouch packaging products. The incumbent will also be responsible for the timely development of the most complex and innovative Sachet & Pouche structures, as well as important improvements to existing structures, as assigned.   
The incumbent will assist the Director of Technical Services in the development and maintenance of product development support systems such as project management systems, product formulations, change controls, etc. 
Being successful in this position means the incumbent will be resourceful, structured, have a deep understanding of products, capable of delivering creative ideas and team mentoring. 


  • Help to ensure that company’s goals are met by managing the R&D team, delegating day-to-day activities across;
  • Plan for medium- long term responsibilities as they relate to further technical personnel needed to support future growth initiatives;
  • Provide appropriate training and/or mentoring to all R&D Engineers in terms of product development techniques;
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a stringent product development management process, including periodic status reporting; 
  • Coordinate projects with R&D Engineers; 
  • Contribute to work procedure improvements for acceleration of the product development process;
  • Ensure R&D analysis, reports, and R&D tax credit project reporting, are well written and communicated on a timely basis;
  • Track and measure efficiency and effectiveness execution of test orders;
  • Conduct performance appraisals, provide professional guidance, personal development, develop training profiles and perform administrative duties, e.g., travel and expense approvals, for direct reports;
  • Conceptualize and manage the development of new products, new or alternative raw materials and new or improved processing technologies, in collaboration with senior managers from Sales, Product management, Production and Cost Accounting;
  • Assist Sales and Marketing to secure new business or retain existing business by coordinating and monitoring product development priorities related to the company strategy;
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement, product line consolidation and cost saving initiatives regarding Sachet & Pouch packaging products; Assist in specifying and starting up new and modified equipment for new products;
  • Analyze and facilitate resolution of process problems with process improvement team members; 
  • Collaborate with Quality department to insure timely responses of customer’s regulatory requests;
  • Work with manufacturing supervisors, production units, Quality and Maintenance to troubleshoot manufacturing problems related to Sachets & Pouches packaging products;
  • Provide advice to customers, field support personnel, and internal production managers regarding improvements to existing products and processes;
  • As required, provide assistance in the field to customers and other company representatives in the successful conversion of customers to new products or in solving major problems with existing products;
  • Develop and maintain association with outside interests pertinent to the needs of R&D within the company, most notably raw material suppliers and equipment suppliers;
  • Stay abreast of new products and technologies for pertinent flexible packaging related to Sachet & Pouch applications;
  • Execute all other duties as required by Director of Technical Services.


  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or material science. Master’s degree or MBA an asset;
  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in the R&D flexible packaging manufacturing environment; 
  • Experience in co-extrusion coating, adhesive lamination, printing and slitting;
  • Material knowledge, in particular packaging resins, but also foil, film, and paper;
  • Strong knowledge of flexible packaging manufacturing process;
  • Strong Project Management skills;
  • Minimum of 3-year experience in a supervisory/managerial role;
  • Ability to train, coach, mentor, and lead others, and to foster teamwork; 
  • Ability to assess and define outcomes of a team and match those to strategic needs of the business; 
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral and written presentation, with proven people management abilities and experience;
  • Strategic thinking and action to effectively navigate complex situations;
  • Must demonstrate problem-solving abilities, including anticipation and communication of risk profile and mitigation plan;
  • Excellent organization and time management skills to handle multiple ongoing projects in addition to day-to-day technical challenges;
  • Solid computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, OneNote and the ability to quickly learn software needed to perform job specific duties;
  • Must be bilingual (French and English).
