Research and Development Manager

Reporting to the Director of Technical Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the timely development of the most complex new flexible packaging structures, as well as important improvements to existing structures, as assigned. To carry out these responsibilities, the incumbent will supervise a team of Packaging Development Engineers (PDE). The incumbent will also be responsible to assist the Director of Technical Services in the development and maintenance of product development support systems such as project management systems, product formulations, change controls, etc., as well as mentoring Product Development Engineers in the process of product development.


  • In collaboration with senior managers from sales, product management, production, costing, etc., conceptualize and manage the development of new products, new or alternative raw materials and new or improved processing technologies;
  • Assist Sales and Marketing to secure new business or retain existing business by coordinating and monitoring product development priorities related to company strategy.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a stringent product development management process, including periodic status reporting.
  • Provide appropriate training and/or mentoring to all PDEs in the terms of appropriate and preferred product development techniques;
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement, product line consolidation and cost saving initiatives appropriate to the technical function;
  • Contribute to work procedure improvements for acceleration of the product development process.
  • Ensure R&D analysis and reports are well written and communicated on a timely basis.
  • Track and measure efficiency and effectiveness of analysis, requests for samples and execution of test orders;
  • Maintain a system to ensure samples requested by the marketing department are made, inspected and shipped to prospect customers;
  • Provide advice to customers, field support personnel, and internal production managers regarding improvements to existing products and processes;
  • As required, provide assistance in the field to customers and other company representatives in the successful conversion of customers to new products or in solving major problems with existing products;
  • Oversee the production of new test materials and processes, and assist in the coordination of subsequent lab tests;
  • Assist in specifying and starting up new and modified equipment for new products;
  • Obtain and disseminate information on competitive products and processes and perform comparative analyses with the company’s equivalent;
  • Develop and maintain association with outside interests pertinent to the needs of R&D within the company, most notably raw material suppliers and equipment suppliers;
  • Stay abreast of new products and technologies for pertinent flexible packaging.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, provide professional guidance, personal development and perform administrative duties, e.g. travel and expense approvals, for direct reports.
  • Execute all other duties as required by Director of Technical Services.


  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Master’s degree or MBA an asset;
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in the flexible packaging industry;
  • Experience in co-extrusion coating and lamination;
  • Material knowledge, in particular packaging resins, but also foil, film, and paper;
  • Experience in supervision;
  • Spoken and written English is mandatory; French is a definite asset.
