Process Excellence Engineer

Job description 

This position is accountable for flexible packaging process improvements and cost reduction projects related to printing presses, extrusion lamination and coating, adhesive lamination, slitting, die cut and similarly related technologies and equipment. Work with plant manufacturing team to implement process and product improvements and cost/waste reduction projects. The project engineer has a major influence in process improvement projects resulting in improving quality, controlling cost, and lowering the overall cost of operation. Responsible to identify areas for productivity improvements as well as developing solutions to production issues which achieves savings in waste, raw materials, etc.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate projects with all team members; notify team members of project status, process defects, and plans of action.
  2. Implement and support SMED and 6S on the work floor daily.
  3. Propose process improvements and cost reduction projects. Develop and implement project plans; form and facilitate teams to meet targeted productivity objectives.
  4. Analyze and facilitate resolution of process problems with process improvement team members.
  5. Coordinate and facilitate teams to work with vendors to improve process materials, reduce lead times and reduce costs on related projects.
  6. Coordinate and facilitate teams to work with customers to improve product quality, reduce lead times, improve service quality, and reduce costs on related projects.
  7. Identify and develop improved process characterization procedures.
  8. Assist in development of Standard Operating procedures for process and equipment operations.
  9. Provides technical advice and support to resolve unusual problems.
  10. Investigates, find root causes and recommends and implements equipment modifications and upgrades and/or implement process improvements.
  11. Assess production crew needs, and developing and implementing process improvements for quality, waste, and productivity improvement.
  12. Investigates causes of ongoing process, quality, production efficiencies and high waste problems, then develops solutions using Lean problem-solving techniques. 
  13. Works with plant resources to ensure technical support resources are always available to production.
  14. Works with manufacturing supervisors, production crews, quality, R&D and maintenance to troubleshoot manufacturing problems and develop corrective actions to eliminate them.
  15. Participates in the evaluation of projects and waivers to aid in the effective scheduling and necessary product development coverage to minimize the risk of machine downtime and high waste due to developmental efforts in manufacturing.
  16. Initiates and documents procedures to safely increase machine productivity and reduce waste while maintaining product quality per customer expectations.
  17. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor`s degree, in technical major or related work experience.
  2. 3-7 years in appropriate manufacturing environment, preferable in flexible packaging industry
  3. Analytical and diagnostics skills
  4. Project management skills
  5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  6. Excellent organization and time management skills
  7. Highly motivated, organized, and self-directed.
  8. General knowledge of products, including the desired properties and quality standards for those products.
  9. Must have strong time management skills to handle multiple ongoing projects in addition to day-to-day process problems.
  10. Solid computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, Share Point, and the ability to quickly learn software needed to perform job specific duties.
  11. Strong knowledge of process used to manufacture and convert flexible packaging.  Especially extrusion coating, solvent based adhesive laminating, flexographic and gravure printing, and slitting/winding
  12. Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is preferred.
  13. Ability to train, coach, mentor, and lead others, and to foster teamwork.  
  14. Ability to work independently or as a team member – able to lead a team.
  15. Understanding of time and motion studies, design of experiments.
  16. Strong troubleshooting skills, uses problem solving techniques that will lead to root cause and permanent corrective actions (ex. SPC, 5 Why’s, Kaizens etc.).
  17. Bilingual French/English is essential
