Plant Project Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer will plan, organize and control projects related to the design, development and improvement of extrusion systems and thermoforming equipment. 



  • Ensure the project/design conforms to the specifications, is manufacturable at estimated costs, and is technically realistic.
  • To supervise the fabrication, assembly, testing and debugging of prototype or proof of concept equipment.
  • Projects are completed on schedule, and within budget, and result in equipment that operates in accordance with specifications.
  • Understanding of design criteria covering a range of various materials that we extrude and thermoform.
  • Initiate, develop and manage process projects aiming at productivity improvement, waste reduction, film quality improvement, and process capability improvement.
  • Manage projects relative to design and development of new equipment automation, in addition to other projects.
  • Write capital appropriations and manage budgets.
  • Oversee outside contractors working at the WPP SV plant.
  • Ensure building/facility are maintained; this includes plant utilities such as production area HVAC units, air compressors, chillers and water as well as lawn, snow and general building maintenance.
  • To support the maintenance and production department as needed.
  • Ensures safe working environment and procedures are in place and followed.
  • Responsible for reporting food packaging safety problems to plant management.
  • In the incumbents absence these responsibilities will be transferred to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Manufacturing Engineering Manager.



  • Excellent computer skills, proficient with MS Office, MS Project and AutoCAD.
  • Basic understanding of extrusion and thermoforming processes.
  • Experience with existing equipment vendors a plus.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical abilities.
  • Self-motivated individual with keen interest in trouble shooting and process improvement by working closely with process, maintenance and production employees.
  • Ability to work with all levels of an organization.
  • Must be trained in and follow company policies on GMP, sanitation, pre-requisite programs, chemical control and food safety plans and policies.
  • Must be competent to carry out food packaging safety and quality responsibilities
  • Good interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and organizational skills.



  • The position of Project Engineer requires experience managing projects in a manufacturing environment. A background in maintenance and or plastics is preferred.
  • B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) or equivalent.
