Costing Analyst

Reporting to the Manager, Accounting Analysis, the Costing Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting product costing and operational data from a variety of sources. Well-developed analytical abilities will be utilized to grow an in-depth knowledge of the standard product costing system.  The candidate will utilize core competencies while working closely with the operations team, providing support with operational cost initiatives and reporting of metrics relating to key performance indicators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Maintain in-depth knowledge of current information and ERP systems as they relate to product costing and operational metrics - collecting and analyzing operational data (eg: manufacturing variances) and updating various product costing information on an ongoing basis (e.g.: standard raw material input costs, inventory write-down provisions, back-flush material usage); assist the Manager – Accounting Analysis with the development and adaptation of new systems and procedures.
-Perform investigation with respect to standard costing manufacturing variance results and issue manufacturing variance reporting to operations management on a weekly basis; with guidance from the Manager – Accounting Analysis, prepare related adjusting journal entries monthly.
-Participate in the preparation of quarterly standard cost updates of material inputs.
-Complete periodic analysis and update of departmental speed and scrap rates that form the basis of standard costs for goods produced.
-Assist the Manager – Accounting Analysis with the compilation of standard work centre rates on an annual basis.
-Assist with the preparation of quarterly obsolete inventory analysis and reporting.
-Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts including spending schedule compilation, historical data population, review of purchasing information, and compilation of direct labour inputs.
-Maintain a working knowledge of fixed asset accounting utilizing the FAS system
-Maintain a working knowledge of COGNOS reporting software such that assistance can be offered to the Manager – Accounting Analysis with respect to reporting library maintenance; develop COGNOS skills that allow for the creation of reports with introductory to moderate levels of complexity.
-Assist in the development, conversion, and ongoing testing of accounting and other components of the management information system as directed by the -Manager – Accounting Analysis to drive continuous improvements.
-Undertake other special projects and/or duties assigned by the Director of Finance and Administration or the Controller.
-Promote teamwork, cooperation, and communication within the department and company.  Interact with all levels of the operation in support of Winpak’s TQI program.
-Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner compliant with ISO 9001 standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) or enrollment in a program targeting such completion.
-3 to 5 years’ experience in a costing/accounting analysis capacity with preference given to candidates holding previous manufacturing experience.
-Strong understanding of standard costing, cost accounting, and basic statistical concepts
-Previous experience conducting moderate to complex analysis on large data sets.
-Working knowledge of computerized accounting systems and above average skills with respect to spreadsheet software.
-Previous experience and skills utilizing report generation software would be considered and asset.
-Ability to cross-train and maintain a working knowledge of the skills required to perform the duties assigned to the other Analyst positions.
-Able to deal with all levels of an organization.
-Able to work under minimal supervision and with tight deadlines.
-Good interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
-Strong analytical and organizational skills.
