POSITION SUMMARY:

The Continuous Improvement/Environmental Sustainability Specialist will utilize continuous improvement and lean management processes to support manufacturing operations.  Specific objectives will include improving productivity, efficiency, and quality and reducing costs.  Additional focus for the position will be in the areas of planning, implementing, and maintaining environmental programs to ensure the highest level of environmental compliance.  Responsibilities will include identifying, developing, and executing long term sustainability initiatives in line with WPP’s sustainability strategy.  Position will also monitor applicable site(s) environmental regulations and provide technical support to Leadership to ensure compliance with internal WPP standards as well as Federal, State, and Local regulations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Continuous Improvement:
    Become proficient in utilizing the corporate ERP to compare manufacturing performance against established production standards to identify sources of manufacturing variances.
    Analyze to determine root cause of manufacturing variances: 
    Reconcile manufacturing orders for actual versus planned performance of resources including materials, labor, machine hours, etc.;
    Facilitate cross-functional analysis of variances to include input from Production/Process, Maintenance, Accounting, etc.;  
    Develop process benchmarks and make recommendations to optimize reporting accuracy and timeliness. 
    Schedule and lead monthly problem solving sessions utilizing various problem solving techniques developing appropriate root-cause and corrective actions. 
    Raise the level of awareness for lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.  Conduct employee training on these topics as required by business needs.
    Identify key opportunities for operational improvement in the areas of: 
    Safety
    Quality
    Cost reduction
    Environmental compliance
    Sustainability initiatives
    Charter and lead Kaizen improvement events to achieve annual improvement targets, operating budgets, and year-over-year productivity improvements

    Environmental:
    Support day-to-day operations activities and hazardous materials management at the WPP Sauk Village and South Chicago Heights facilities.
    Oversee the site’s chemical control and hazardous waste programs for compliance, tracking, reporting, permitting, and disposal (as appropriate). 
    Champion assigned site(s) environmental and sustainability improvement initiatives: 
    Facilitate requisite training and compliance to ensure appropriate employee engagement
    Develop meaningful KPI’s relatable at a day-to-day level with employees along with appropriate metrics and reporting to track progress for BU and corporate reporting
    Identify and implement new, innovative ways to reduce water and energy consumption
    Implement, communicate, and market sustainability campaigns to internal and external stakeholders
    Drive site recycling programs with the goal of achieving zero landfill
    Serve as a liaison for regulatory agencies

    Sustainability:
    Focus on recycling efforts
    Focus on sustainability and overall process improvement
    Expand scrap recovery and minimize waste stream
    Facilitate capital expenditures in support of waste stream reprocessing
    Support environmental sustainability initiatives
    Represent WPP as a member of the corporate Winpak Sustainability Team to share and attain best-practices
    Support Winpak’s sustainability action plan by working with the Corporate Sustainability Director and WPP Advisory Committee to develop, prioritize, and implement initiatives that facilitate both corporate and WPP business objectives 
    Benchmark WPP performance against Winpak’s corporate sustainability goals
    Support the data collection for the annual Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) filing and Winpak’s sustainability report
    Stay current with pertinent developments in the expanding field of sustainability and participate in industry events and relevant associations as required

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be trained in and follow company policies on GMP, sanitation, pre-requisite programs, chemical control and food plans and policies
    Strong interest in environmental management and sustainability practices that minimize environmental impacts.    
    Excellent computer skills including MS Office and MRP/ERP systems
    Motivated self-starter that can identify opportunities and be pro-active in developing and implementing solutions
    Strong analytical skills
    Must be competent to carry out food packaging safety and quality responsibilities.
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.    

EXPERIENCE &EDUCATION:

  • Five-plus years experience in a manufacturing environment consisting of high-speed/continuous processes and automation systems. 
    Formal training in Continuous Improvement including LEAN, Six Sigma, TPM, etc. 
    Experience and/or formal training in LEAN management systems, Kaizen events, Six Sigma. and structured problem solving is preferred.
    Good communication, computer proficiency, problem solving skills, and the ability to work in a 'team' environment, is essential.
    Bachelor’s degree
