Accounting Analyst

THE POSITION:


Reporting to the Manager – Accounting Analysis, the Accounting Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting financial and operational data from a variety of sources. Strong communication skills will allow data analysis to be performed in consultation with subject matter experts and allow for resulting insights to be communicated verbally, in writing, and/or using financial models. A proficiency in reporting software and analytical tools (BI) will support moderate to advanced data analysis and facilitate an ongoing refinement of existing processes. As a leading user of reporting software, the candidate will also be responsible for developing and maintaining financial and operational reports utilized by a diverse set of users.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Maintain familiarity with current information and ERP systems as they relate to assigned tasks - collecting and analyzing operational data and updating   various financial information on an ongoing basis; assist the Manager – Accounting Analysis with the development and adaptation of new systems and   procedures.
-Assist the Manager – Accounting Analysis (COGNOS Administrator) with the ongoing maintenance of the business unit’s COGNOS reporting library; maintain   an in-depth working knowledge of COGNOS reporting software such that the ability exists to compile/create moderate to complex level COGNOS reports to   support both finance and operational demands.
-Oversee and assist in the maintenance of the capital asset subledger (acquisition, disposal, and control of assets), capital expenditures status reporting, and   chairing of monthly capital expenditures committee meetings.
-Liaise with operations regarding capital asset policies and procedures and provide support with business case preparation during the capital project   authorization phase, as required by the capital policy.
-Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts including spending schedule compilation, historical data population, and review of purchasing information.
-Assist the Costing Analyst in the preparation of quarterly standard cost updates of material inputs.
-Assist the Costing Analyst in the investigation with respect to standard costing manufacturing variance results and issue manufacturing variance reporting   to  operations management on a weekly basis; assist the Manager – Accounting Analysis with any required adjusting journal entry preparation as required.
-Complete periodic analysis and update of departmental speed and scrap rates that form the basis of standard costs for goods produced.
-Prepare month-end journal entries (eg: manufacturing variance adjustments).
-Prepare quarterly obsolete inventory analysis and reporting.
-Assist in the development, conversion, and ongoing testing of accounting and other components of the management information system as directed by the - Manager – Accounting Analysis.
-Work with the Manager – Accounting Analysis to develop and prepare various management reports with the goal of assisting with continuous operational   improvement.
-Undertake other special projects and/or duties assigned by the Director of Finance and Administration or the Controller.
-Promote teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication within the department and Company.Interact with all levels of the operation in support of -Winpak’s TQI program.
-Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner compliant with ISO 9001 standards.

-Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) or enrollment in a program targeting such completion.
-3 to 5 years’ experience in an accounting/financial analysis capacity with preference given to candidates holding previous manufacturing experience.
-Working knowledge of computerized accounting systems and above average skills with respect to spreadsheet software.
-Previous experience and strong skills utilizing report generation software (specific experience utilizing COGNOS and/or basic computer programming skills   would be considered an asset).
-Previous experience conducting moderate to complex analysis on large data sets and a strong understanding of basic statistical concepts.
-Ability to cross-train and maintain a working knowledge of the skills required to perform the duties assigned to the other Analyst positions.
-Able to deal with all levels of an organization.
-Able to work under minimal supervision and with tight deadlines.
-Good interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
-Strong analytical and organizational skills.
