Contributing to a Sustainable Future

Winpak is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. As part of that mandate, Winpak embraces the principle of sustainable development and continuously strives to manufacture packaging that is sustainable throughout its life cycle. Consequently, Winpak has established the following sustainability objectives:

  • Manufacture packaging that meets the intended function and performance criteria.
  • Manufacture packaging that maximizes use of recycled and/or renewable energy sources and materials.
  • Manufacture packaging that is sourced, produced and transported to maximize sustainability.

In support of these objectives, Winpak carries out a multitude of activities including:

  • Minimizing the use of source materials by:
  • Down-gauging material thickness through improvement of material properties
  • Designing packaging that optimizes material usage
  • Recycling plastic in the manufacturing process
  • Investing in new equipment that provides tighter process control and less scrap generation
  • Minimizing package end-use product waste by:
  • Manufacturing barrier materials that extend product shelf life
  • Manufacturing portion-controlled packaging that minimizes product waste at the consumer
  • Recycling waste from manufacturing processes by:
  • Sending excess plastic waste for recycling and use in other products
  • Recycling corrugated cardboard materials
  • Minimizing the use of secondary packaging by:
  • Sorting and reusing or recycling pallets
  • Establishing pallet return programs
  • Using corrugated cardboard with recycled content
  • Reusing corrugated cardboard internally where feasible
  • Establishing facility recycling programs:
  • Can, bottle and paper recycling in facilities
  • Used battery and electronics disposal through reputable recyclers
  • Reducing transportation impact by:
  • Optimizing orders for full truckload quantities
  • Using rail when possible for raw materials
  • Using intermodal rail for long-distance shipments of finished goods
  • Maximizing energy efficiency through:
  • Use of rigorous preventive maintenance programs to optimize machine efficiencies
  • Plant and equipment upgrades to improve energy efficiency
  • Energy conservation initiatives in plants and offices
  • Reducing facility emissions by:
  • Complying with all applicable environmental laws and regulations
  • Large Bulk Liners and FIBC Products
  • Moving to lower-impact production processes where possible
  • Use of emission control and reduction equipment
  • Utilizing cooling water in closed loop systems
  • Promoting sustainability initiatives through employee training and participation activities:
  • Maintaining active environmental compliance committees at each production facility
